Clinic & Home-Based
ABA Therapy
serving San Antonio And Surrounding areas
In Clinic ABA
Our ABA Center is open to both children and adolescents. We work with families to assess each individual and determine the most appropriate setting. Many children receive both clinic and home-based ABA.
In Home ABA
The home is where most children spend the majority of their time. It is important they (and their parents) have the tools they need to build skills and address challenging behaviors in the enviornment that often matters most.
Parent Training
Parent Training is included as a part of our ABA treatment plans. We also offer this as its own independent service. Parent Training is central to the work we do with children on the spectrum.
ABA Therapy For Autism
South Texas Behavioral Institute provides client focused Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). Our clinic and home-based services serve the San Antonio, TX area. We are committed to working with individuals across the lifespan. Our goal is to help each person reach their full potential. We strive for excellence by working to create lifelong meaningful change one step at a time.
We provide ABA services in a variety of locations including our clinic and the home. Most of our clients see us at home, in clinic and even in the community. This allows us to generalize behaviors across enviornments. Our clients are able to use their new skills at home, in the clinic, at school, and anywhere else.
Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA)
What It Is And How It Works
Applied Behavior Analysis is often referred to as ABA. It's therapy used for individuals with autism. ABA is the application of the science of behavior. It works to change socially significant behaviors. We decrease maladaptive behaviors. For many children these are behaviors like tantruming or elopement. At the same time, we also work to increase skills and desired behaviors. We may work on building routines, self care, social skills, education, and more.
What We Work On
Every treatment plan is unique to the child, teen or adult we are working with. As we work toward your child’s unique goals, the process often includes some of the examples outlined here.
Social Skills
ABA therapies such as DTT and NET are used to increase communication & social skills. We often work on social skills opportunities naturally found in the environment.
Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA)
FBAs are part of the program planning portion of ABA. These assessments are used to help us to determine the function of each behavior and how we are going to address it.
Parent Training
Parent training is a core part of each treatment plan. We model to parents how they can interact with their child best to create a better and more positive family dynamic. Parent training allows parents to get actively involved in helping their child reach their full potential.
Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
BIPs are apart of most ABA programs. While we work to increase goals, we are also addressing maladaptive behaviors. This includes elopement, self-harm, and other dangerous or socially inappropriate behaviors.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Insurances do you take?
Currently, we are in-network with Humana Tricare East & Tricare 4 Life, United Healthcare/Optum Behavioral Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. We can support some private pay from individuals as well as establish contracts with provider agencies. Please contact us to inquire what our fee schedule is.
Do you take Medicaid?
Back on June 15, 2019, Governor Abbott signed HB1 which included Rider 32 covering intensive behavioral intervention. The implementation of coverage is dependent on the Health and Human Rights Commission (HHSC) establishing and appropriating funds. In August 2020, notice was given that the Medicaid Implementation date for ABA coverage is estimated to be September 1, 2021 and will cover persons under the age of 20 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Does my child need an ASD diagnosis?
Unfortunately if ABA is to be covered by insurance, a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ICD-10 Code F84.0) is required. There are advocate groups out there working to expand coverage to individuals with different diagnoses that would benefit from ABA. There are local programs that cover less intensive ABA or behavioral supports for individuals who do not have an ASD diagnosis.
With Covid-19, we are not ready to resume in-person services so are there telehealth or remote options?
The remote services that can be provided are largely dependent on who the payer is. Some insurances are only allowing Parent Meetings and Training via secure video-conferencing while others allow for direct one-to-one ABA services to be provided by this modality. We have had success with both. Parent training and direction is important in order to establish structure, routines, and schedules as well as implement ABA techniques and principles when we cannot be there. Our staff has been trained to use virtual tools to run Discrete Trial Training (DTT) while still encouraging Naturalistic Environment Training (NET) opportunities to decrease regression and parallel play by means of telehealth. We have established HIPAA-secure GoToMeeting accounts to stay in compliance and protect your privacy.
How long will it be before my child is seen?
Ideally, we would like to get your family in for a complimentary Meet and Greet within a week of your initial contact. Upon completing the initial meeting, paperwork and insurance verification of ABA coverage, we will request an Authorization for Assessment. Timelines and requirements vary slightly with each insurance but once we receive authorization for assessment, we schedule a few times for observation and assessment in the different settings. Once Assessment is completed, the BCBA will analyze all the information then record all of the findings and recommendations within the Treatment Plan. This plan will be checked internally and approved for submission. An appointment will be set up with you to review the Treatment Plan and sign after any corrections or adjustments have been made. The treatment plan is then submitted to the funding source of one-to-one ABA services. We have found that this process can typically be achieved in about 3-6 weeks.
Where are services provided?
Covid-19 has changed things a bit but with all the precautions in place, we continue to see clients primarily in our clinic and at home. However, STXBI has always been known for going where we are needed! Dependent on what the initial assessment indicates, we may provide ABA services in our clinic, at home, at daycares and in the community to generalize learning to all environments the individual typically finds himself in. Is your child throwing tantrums at the grocery store or during religious service? We have had success decreasing problem behaviors in these settings and many others by using positive pro-social ABA techniques.
Who will see my child?
All of our clients’ treatment, regardless of the funding source, will be overseen by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who is fully licensed in the state of Texas as a Behavior Analyst (LBA). The team will be chosen depending on the intensity recommended and level of expertise needed for the successful execution of programming. Typically, most direct ABA therapy services will be provided by one or more highly trained and qualified Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT). The BCBA will provide ongoing support to the RBTs working directly with the client through supervision and additional training. The BCBA will intervene directly when necessary to modify a program due to mastery or lack of progress on a regular basis and will also provide parent training on a consistent and recurring schedule. You can expect to see your BCBA on a weekly or at a minimum biweekly basis.
Will ABA change my child’s unique personality?
At STXBI, we want to get to know your child as the unique individual that he or she is and promote meaningful growth. ABA uses evidence-based behavioral interventions to support and continue to develop independence without focusing on the notion that there is a perfect way to be. In working with children, we along with the parents must at times make assumptions about what is best for the child but aim to never target a behavior for reduction unless it is harmful or disruptive to the child or others. We strive to establish individualized treatment based on positive reinforcement and build on your child’s strengths and interests to give him or her the best chance at achieving his or her full potential.
