Frequently Asked Questions
What Insurances do you take?
Currently, we are in-network with Humana Tricare East & Tricare 4 Life, United Healthcare/Optum Behavioral Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. We can support some private pay from individuals as well as establish contracts with provider agencies. Please contact us to inquire what our fee schedule is.
Do you take Medicaid?
Back on June 15, 2019, Governor Abbott signed HB1 which included Rider 32 covering intensive behavioral intervention. The implementation of coverage is dependent on the Health and Human Rights Commission (HHSC) establishing and appropriating funds. In August 2020, notice was given that the Medicaid Implementation date for ABA coverage is estimated to be September 1, 2021 and will cover persons under the age of 20 with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Does my child need an ASD diagnosis?
Unfortunately if ABA is to be covered by insurance, a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ICD-10 Code F84.0) is required. There are advocate groups out there working to expand coverage to individuals with different diagnoses that would benefit from ABA. There are local programs that cover less intensive ABA or behavioral supports for individuals who do not have an ASD diagnosis.
With Covid-19, we are not ready to resume in-person services so are there telehealth or remote options?
The remote services that can be provided are largely dependent on who the payer is. Some insurances are only allowing Parent Meetings and Training via secure video-conferencing while others allow for direct one-to-one ABA services to be provided by this modality. We have had success with both. Parent training and direction is important in order to establish structure, routines, and schedules as well as implement ABA techniques and principles when we cannot be there. Our staff has been trained to use virtual tools to run Discrete Trial Training (DTT) while still encouraging Naturalistic Environment Training (NET) opportunities to decrease regression and parallel play by means of telehealth. We have established HIPAA-secure GoToMeeting accounts to stay in compliance and protect your privacy.
How long will it be before my child is seen?
Ideally, we would like to get your family in for a complimentary Meet and Greet within a week of your initial contact. Upon completing the initial meeting, paperwork and insurance verification of ABA coverage, we will request an Authorization for Assessment. Timelines and requirements vary slightly with each insurance but once we receive authorization for assessment, we schedule a few times for observation and assessment in the different settings. Once Assessment is completed, the BCBA will analyze all the information then record all of the findings and recommendations within the Treatment Plan. This plan will be checked internally and approved for submission. An appointment will be set up with you to review the Treatment Plan and sign after any corrections or adjustments have been made. The treatment plan is then submitted to the funding source of one-to-one ABA services. We have found that this process can typically be achieved in about 3-6 weeks.
Where are services provided?
Covid-19 has changed things a bit but with all the precautions in place, we continue to see clients primarily in our clinic and at home. However, STXBI has always been known for going where we are needed! Dependent on what the initial assessment indicates, we may provide ABA services in our clinic, at home, at daycares and in the community to generalize learning to all environments the individual typically finds himself in. Is your child throwing tantrums at the grocery store or during religious service? We have had success decreasing problem behaviors in these settings and many others by using positive pro-social ABA techniques.
Who will see my child?
All of our clients’ treatment, regardless of the funding source, will be overseen by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) who is fully licensed in the state of Texas as a Behavior Analyst (LBA). The team will be chosen depending on the intensity recommended and level of expertise needed for the successful execution of programming. Typically, most direct ABA therapy services will be provided by one or more highly trained and qualified Registered Behavior Technicians (RBT). The BCBA will provide ongoing support to the RBTs working directly with the client through supervision and additional training. The BCBA will intervene directly when necessary to modify a program due to mastery or lack of progress on a regular basis and will also provide parent training on a consistent and recurring schedule. You can expect to see your BCBA on a weekly or at a minimum biweekly basis.
Will ABA change my child’s unique personality?
At STXBI, we want to get to know your child as the unique individual that he or she is and promote meaningful growth. ABA uses evidence-based behavioral interventions to support and continue to develop independence without focusing on the notion that there is a perfect way to be. In working with children, we along with the parents must at times make assumptions about what is best for the child but aim to never target a behavior for reduction unless it is harmful or disruptive to the child or others. We strive to establish individualized treatment based on positive reinforcement and build on your child’s strengths and interests to give him or her the best chance at achieving his or her full potential.
